Thomas Pieters Would Rather Walk Away From Golf Than Go Back to the PGA Tour

Belgium's Thomas Pieters just laid down a hard line: if LIV Golf implodes, he's not crawling back to the PGA Tour. Period.

"I'm definitely never going back to the PGA Tour," Pieters told host Dan Rapaport on the "Dan on Golf" YouTube channel recently. "I've never liked that life. And that's not me having a go at the PGA Tour, it's not for me. I tried it and I just wasn't happy there."

A Guy Who Tried the Traditional Route and Bounced

The 34-year-old joined the PGA Tour back in 2017 and made 53 starts, but it never clicked. His best finish was runner-up at the Genesis Open that same year. Meanwhile, he's racked up six wins on Europe's DP World Tour, which tells you everything about where he's felt more at home.

He signed with LIV Golf in 2023 and now plays for Dustin Johnson's 4Aces GC. This season he finished T4 at the Riyadh opener in February and took third place at LIV Golf Hong Kong in March. But with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund threatening to cut funding, things got scary fast.

When LIV's Future Got Real, Pieters Was Ready to Quit

Pieters admitted he was "ready to retire" if LIV decided to "pull the plug." "The atmosphere was really grim," he said. "I had enough of it after 3-4 hours, everybody talking about it."

But he's not panicking yet. He's focused on grinding through the next six or seven tournaments on LIV and waiting to hear more from CEO Scott O'Neill before he makes any big moves. "We are just guessing right now," Pieters said. "But if we're playing for $5 million next year or I could play on the DP World Tour for $3 million but be close to home that's something I'd have to look at it when it comes."

He's a realist about the challenge ahead. "Scott is telling us that he's going to a broader market and trying to fund this for next year. I guess it's a massive challenge. But we just have to wait and see."
