Wilt Chamberlain wasn't drafted in the traditional sense, but rather joined the NBA in 1959 as a "territorial pick" by the Philadelphia Warriors. This now-defunct rule allowed teams to forgo a first-round pick in exchange for a player from their local territory – specifically, within 50 miles of the team's home arena. While Chamberlain played college basketball at the University of Kansas, the Warriors successfully argued that he grew up in Philadelphia and played high school ball there, making him eligible. The league commissioner, Maurice Podoloff, agreed, effectively granting Philadelphia an early claim on the future superstar before the standard draft even began.
Chamberlain's early career trajectory was nothing short of astronomical. From the moment he stepped onto the hardwood, he redefined what was possible for a center. In his rookie 1959-60 season, he averaged an unbelievable 37.6 points and 27.0 rebounds per game, immediately claiming both the NBA Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player awards – a feat only achieved by one other player in league history. He led the league in scoring, rebounding, and minutes played, transforming the Warriors into a legitimate contender overnight.
This unprecedented debut was just a taste of what was to come. Wilt continued his statistical onslaught, famously scoring 100 points in a single game just two seasons later and averaging over 50 points per game in the 1961-62 season. His early years were a relentless exhibition of athletic prowess and scoring artistry, solidifying his status as a basketball icon from the very beginning of his professional journey.
