Zach Benson Is Already the NHL's Most Annoying Player and His Own Teammates Want to Punch Him

Here's the thing about Zach Benson: he's the kind of guy who gets under everyone's skin, and his own Buffalo Sabres teammates are right there with you wanting to throw hands. But then you remember he's actually on your team, and suddenly that edge becomes your secret weapon.

The 20-year-old winger has been building this pesky reputation for years, but the league is finally waking up to what the Sabres already knew. He's that rare breed of player who can actually play the game at an elite skill level while also being an absolute pest on every single shift. That's the part that really gets to people.

Even His Goalie Wants to Fight Him

Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen didn't mince words about the Benson experience. "In pretty much every practice, I want to punch him in the face, too," Luukkonen said. And he's not exaggerating for effect here. The frustration is real.

But here's what makes it worse for opponents: Benson isn't just some agitator who can't play. "The worst part of [going against him] is that he's an unbelievably skilled player who can also play on the edge of that rat-like game," Luukkonen explained. "That's just pissing you off even more, when it's an actually great player who is fighting hard for every puck, and scoring goals, but he can also do all that extra stuff to get under your skin. It's annoying."

Teammates Get It. Finally, the League Does Too

Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin was ready for the recognition to arrive. "All I can say is, finally," Dahlin said of Benson being recognized around the league. "People really get to see who he is. He's the ultimate teammate. He's the guy you want to have on your team. He just brings great energy, he's got that edge to his game, he reads the game very well."

Benson isn't worried about his emerging reputation as a playoff pest. He's comfortable being exactly who he is: a skilled forward with an edge, a guy fighting for every puck, scoring goals, and doing all that extra stuff designed to drive the other team absolutely crazy. That's not a flaw in Buffalo. That's the blueprint.
