A 27-Year-Old Is Leading Washington's Undefeated Champs, And Nobody In The State Is Ready For It

Alright, fam! You thought the high school hoops scene in Washington was already electric? Well, buckle up, because Richland High, our state's undisputed kings, just dropped a bombshell that's got the entire Evergreen State buzzing. They've found their new head coach, and trust me, this hire is going to make waves. We're talking about Will Burghardt, the guy stepping in to lead the Bombers, and get this, he's only 27 years old! Yeah, you read that right. The number one ranked team from this past 2025-26 season, coming off a perfect record and a state title, just handed the keys to the youngest head coach in program history. What an absolute wild move!

The Young Gun Ready to Lead

This ain't some rookie getting a shot out of nowhere, though. Burghardt might be young, but he's been putting in the work. He's coming off three seasons coaching boys basketball over at Newport in Oregon, where he put together a solid 49-24 overall record. That's a winning pedigree right there! And in his final season with the Cubs, he led them to a 19-5 record and took them on a deep playoff run in the OHSAA. So, the man knows how to win, he knows how to coach, and he knows how to get his team playing at a high level. For Richland to make him the seventh head coach since 1947, and the youngest ever out of 30 total coaches, tells you everything you need to know about the belief they have in him. He's got that fire, that fresh perspective that could keep the Bombers on top for years.

Richland's Reign of Dominance

And let's not forget who Burghardt is taking over. Richland isn't just a good team, they're a *dynasty* right now. They just wrapped up their fourth consecutive season with 20 or more wins! Not only that, they clinched the Class 4A state championship, beating Gonzaga Prep 63-49, which is a pretty convincing win if you ask me. Oh, and did I mention they did all of that with a perfect 28-0 record this past season? Yeah, 28-0! They were absolutely flawless, finishing up as the No. 1 team in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. This is a program with serious tradition and an incredibly high bar. Burghardt isn't inheriting a rebuilding project, he's stepping into the driver's seat of a finely tuned, championship-winning machine. So, what's next for the Bombers with Coach Burghardt at the helm? The expectations are sky-high, as they should be for the state's top program. Can he keep that perfect record streak going? Can he lead them to another state title, or even push for a deeper national recognition? This is an exciting time for Richland hoops, and frankly, for Washington high school basketball as a whole. All eyes are going to be on the Bombers as they embark on this new era. You know Seattle On Tap will be right there with you, watching every dribble, every shot, and every win.
