Cole Caufield Breaks Drought and Montreal Takes Series Lead Over Buffalo in Game 3 Blowout

The Montreal Canadiens just put the Buffalo Sabres in a serious hole. Cole Caufield, snapping a five-game scoring drought, buried a go-ahead power-play goal to spark Montreal's dominant 6-2 victory in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup on Sunday night. With that win, the Canadiens grabbed a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven.

Caufield's Clutch Return Ignites the Avalanche

Caufield's tiebreaking power-play tally was exactly what Montreal needed. The goal snapped a five-game stretch without a point for the star, but when it mattered most in Game 3, he delivered. That marker set the tone for what turned into a complete domination of the visiting Sabres, with Montreal's offense firing on all cylinders in front of a packed home crowd.

Canadiens' Stranglehold on the Series

A 51-game accomplishment fueled Montreal's momentum into this matchup, and they showed no signs of slowing down. The Sabres couldn't match the Canadiens' intensity or execution, getting throttled 6-2 in a performance that has to have Buffalo rethinking everything. Montreal's depth scoring, combined with Caufield's return to form, gives the Canadiens real control heading back to Buffalo for Game 4.

The Sabres are staring down a 2-1 deficit in a best-of-seven. They need to respond fast, or Montreal's early series lead could become a mountain too tall to climb.
