Defending 4A State Champs Richland Bombers Tap Young Talent, Will Burghardt, as New Head Coach

Richland High School, fresh off a perfect 28-0 season and a dominant Class 4A state championship victory, has made a monumental announcement that’s shaking up the Washington high school basketball scene. The Bombers, the undisputed kings of the court, are entrusting their powerhouse program to a new, dynamic leader: 27-year-old Will Burghardt. This bold move signals an exciting new chapter for a team already etched into the WIAA history books, proving that even at the pinnacle of success, there's always room for fresh energy and vision. Burghardt steps into the biggest shoes in Washington prep basketball, poised to build on an incredible legacy and continue the tradition of excellence at Richland.

A Young Visionary Takes the Helm

Burghardt's appointment makes him the youngest head coach ever to take the reins of the storied Richland boys basketball program. This isn't just a new face on the sidelines, it’s a statement from Richland, embracing a forward-thinking approach for their nationally recognized team. The Bombers are a program with deep roots, having had 30 head coaches in their illustrious history, with Burghardt becoming only the seventh since 1947. This decision highlights a clear intention to maintain their elite status while injecting youthful vigor into a program that has consistently produced winners. The passion and drive required to lead a team of this caliber are immense, and Burghardt's age belies a remarkable coaching acumen already proven in Oregon.

Building on a Dynasty of Dominance

Richland’s recent track record is nothing short of phenomenal. The Bombers wrapped up their fourth consecutive season with 20 or more wins, culminating in a flawless 28-0 record this past season. Their journey to the Class 4A state championship was a display of relentless dedication and skill, culminating in a commanding 63-49 victory over a strong Gonzaga Prep team in the final. This incredible run cemented their status as the No. 1 team in the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. Burghardt arrives with his own impressive resume, having spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport High School in Oregon. During his tenure with the Cubs, he amassed an impressive overall record of 49-24. In his final season, he guided Newport to a stellar 19-5 record and a deep playoff run within the OHSAA, showcasing his ability to develop talent and win crucial games. His experience cultivating successful programs, even across state lines, makes him an ideal fit for the high expectations at Richland.

The anticipation is palpable across District 8 as Bomber Nation looks forward to seeing how Coach Burghardt will lead this championship-caliber squad. Taking over a team that just finished undefeated and earned a state title presents a unique challenge, but also an incredible opportunity. The youth, passion, and strategic mind Burghardt brings could very well be the spark that ignites an even longer period of dominance for Richland basketball. The foundation is rock solid, built on years of hard work and dedication from players and previous coaching staff. With Will Burghardt now at the helm, the future of Richland Bombers basketball looks brighter than ever, promising more thrilling moments for fans across Washington State.
