Randal Grichuk Walked Off the Mariners in the Eighth and Seattle's Still Not Over It

The Seattle Mariners came into Chicago looking to make noise against the White Sox, but instead they got punched in the gut in the eighth inning. Randal Grichuk hit a tying home run leading off the bottom of the eighth, and just like that, the White Sox turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners are heading home from this series with a loss, and the White Sox took two of three.

How It Went Wrong

You have to give credit to the Mariners for clawing back to take a 1-0 lead into the eighth. That's a one-run game in a rivalry series, the kind where you feel like you're one swing away from walking out of there victorious. But Grichuk had other plans. He greeted the reliever with that tying bomb leading off the eighth, and suddenly the momentum flipped completely. From there, the White Sox found the go-ahead run and that was all she wrote. A one-run loss on the road is tough to swallow, especially when you had a lead going into the late innings.

What's Next

The Mariners head back to Seattle having dropped this matchup to Chicago. It's the kind of series that stings because it felt winnable right up until the moment it wasn't. The focus now shifts to the next opportunity to right the ship back at T-Mobile Park.
