Lacey, WA - In a championship game that will be talked about for years, the Shelton Highclimbers delivered an unforgettable performance, capturing the 2026 WIAA 3A State Fastpitch Softball title with a dramatic 4-3 extra-inning victory over the resilient Kennewick Lions. The atmosphere at the Lacey fields on May 21, 2026, was electric, as fans witnessed a pitching duel, clutch hitting, and the sheer will of two exceptional teams vying for the ultimate prize in Washington high school softball.

Pitching Duel Dominates Early Innings

From the first pitch, it was clear this would be a battle of aces. Shelton’s junior phenom, **Maya Rodriguez**, showcased her dominant arm, consistently baffling Kennewick batters with a mix of fastballs and devastating changeups. She hurled seven masterful innings, allowing only two runs and striking out ten, embodying the heart of the Highclimbers' defense. Across the diamond, Kennewick’s senior leader, **Sophia Perez**, was equally impressive, matching Rodriguez pitch for pitch. Perez’s precision and composure kept the powerful Shelton lineup in check for much of the game, setting up an exhilarating showdown.

The scoreboard remained tight through regulation. Kennewick managed to break the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when star outfielder **Olivia Martinez** scorched a double to left field, driving in a run. Shelton quickly answered back in the bottom of the fifth, as senior catcher **Chloe Larson** launched a solo home run that sent the Highclimber faithful into a frenzy, tying the game at 1-1. Both pitchers dug deep, refusing to yield, and the game ultimately headed to extra innings, a true testament to the competitive spirit of these 3A powerhouses.

Highclimbers Mount a Late Charge

The eighth inning brought the tension to a boiling point. Kennewick managed to push two runs across, taking a 3-1 lead and putting immense pressure on Shelton. But under the guidance of head coach **Sarah Mitchell**, the Highclimbers refused to wilt. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Shelton mounted an improbable rally. A walk, followed by a clutch single from **Chloe Larson**, brought the tying run to the plate. Then, stepping into the box with the weight of the championship on her shoulders, freshman sensation **Ava Chen** delivered the hit of her young career.

Chen, showing incredible poise beyond her years, lined a screaming double into the gap, bringing home two runs and tying the game again, sending the crowd into absolute pandemonium. The roar was deafening as the Highclimbers surged with renewed momentum. The game moved to the ninth, still tied. After **Maya Rodriguez** shut down the Lions in the top half, Shelton came up in the bottom of the ninth, determined to finish what they started.

A Championship for the Ages

With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the ninth, it was **Ava Chen** once more. The freshman, who had already tied the game, stepped up and drove a hard ground ball through the left side, scoring the winning run and igniting a joyous celebration on the field. The Shelton dugout erupted, piling onto Chen as the crowd roared its approval for this incredible WIAA State Championship triumph. Coach **David Thompson** and his Kennewick Lions fought valiantly, leaving everything on the field in a display of true sportsmanship and grit.

This victory marks a monumental achievement for the Shelton Highclimbers softball program, a testament to years of hard work, dedication, and the indomitable spirit of its players.
