Tahoma Bears Clutch Victory Over Puyallup Vikings in Thrilling WIAA 4A State Fastpitch Showdown!

RICHLAND, WA - The 2026 WIAA 4A State Fastpitch Softball tournament kicked off on Field 3 with an instant classic, as the Tahoma Bears and Puyallup Vikings delivered a dramatic back-and-forth battle. Tahoma emerged victorious with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Puyallup on May 22, 2026. This nail-biting contest was a testament to the grit and talent defining Washington State prep sports, showcasing two of the state's premier programs from the always-competitive 4A classification.

Pitching Duel Sets the Tone

From the outset, the game was dominated by two stellar performances on the mound. Tahoma's senior ace, Maya Rodriguez, brought her A-game, baffling Puyallup hitters with a mix of fastballs and deceptive off-speed pitches. Rodriguez pitched a complete game, fanning eight Vikings and allowing only two runs on five hits. Her composure in high-pressure situations, particularly in the fifth inning with two runners on, was truly remarkable. On the other side, Puyallup's senior pitcher, Emily Davis, was equally impressive, carving up the Tahoma lineup, recording seven strikeouts. It was a masterclass in pitching from both sides.

Puyallup initially broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when senior slugger Olivia Green launched a solo home run over the left-field fence, electrifying the Vikings' dugout. Tahoma quickly responded in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a couple of walks and a timely RBI single by sophomore Isabelle Chen to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained locked until the sixth inning, a testament to the defensive prowess and pitching dominance displayed by both teams.

Clutch Hitting Decides a Nail-Biter

The tension ratcheted up in the sixth inning when Puyallup pushed another run across. Junior Taylor Johnson hit a sharp single up the middle, scoring a runner from second and putting the Vikings ahead 2-1. However, the Tahoma Bears refused to yield. In the bottom of the seventh, with their backs against the wall, Tahoma rallied. A leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position. Then, junior standout Chloe Miller stepped to the plate. With the game on her shoulders, Miller delivered a scorching line drive to the gap in right-center, bringing home the tying run and, after a throwing error, the winning run. The Tahoma dugout erupted as Miller rounded second, securing the dramatic 3-2 victory.

"These kids never quit, that's their superpower," exclaimed an ecstatic Tahoma head coach, Sarah Thompson, after the game. "Puyallup is an incredibly tough team, and Emily Davis pitched a fantastic game. But Maya was phenomenal, and Chloe just put us on her back. This is what WIAA state softball is all about, pure heart and determination." Puyallup coach Mike Peterson added, "It was a tough loss, but I couldn't be prouder of our effort. We battled hard against a great Tahoma team."

This thrilling opening-round contest sends Tahoma deeper into the WIAA 4A State Fastpitch Softball championship bracket. Their resilience and ability to perform under pressure will serve them well as they chase a state title. For Puyallup, while a tough loss, their performance demonstrated they are a legitimate contender and will look to bounce back in the consolation bracket, vying for a high finish. Both teams exemplify the spirit of competition and dedication that makes Washington high school sports so compelling.
