Yakima, WA - The impossible happened. West Valley High School's magnificent, undefeated season, a testament to months of grit and skill, came to a stunning halt on Saturday, May 23, 2026. In a seismic upset that sent ripples through the WIAA 4A State Baseball Tournament, the Curtis Vikings delivered a heartbreaking first-round loss to the previously flawless Rams at Yakima County Stadium. It was a game nobody expected to go this way, yet it proved once again why Washington state high school baseball is filled with such unpredictable, high-stakes drama.

For weeks, the West Valley Rams had been the talk of the state, a powerhouse steamrolling every opponent in their path. Their flawless record, built on dominant pitching, timely hitting, and suffocating defense, had many penciling them in for a deep run, if not a state title. Players like pitcher Rhyse Elder, who also contributed offensively with a crucial two-run single, and dynamic base runners like Colby Graham, seen sliding safely into third, and Jack Goodrich, who managed to score, had become local legends. The collective effort of the squad, including solid fieldwork from players like Karter Huwe, embodied the spirit of a true championship contender.

A Perfect Run Interrupted

The pressure of maintaining perfection in high school sports is immense, and every game, every pitch, feels magnified. West Valley had carried that burden with grace and skill, navigating the regular season and district play without a single blemish. They showcased an unwavering focus, a commitment to excellence that coaches dream of instilling in their athletes. Their journey to the state tournament was one of triumph after triumph, building anticipation and excitement for their pursuit of a state championship. This perfect record wasn't just a number, it represented countless hours of practice, early mornings, late nights, and the unified ambition of a team.

Curtis Delivers the Upset Blow

But the state tournament is a different beast entirely, a place where legends are made and dreams are shattered in the blink of an eye. The Curtis Vikings, while not undefeated, brought their own brand of tenacity and determination to Yakima. They played with nothing to lose and everything to gain, seizing every opportunity. The details of the game will sting for West Valley faithful, but the undeniable fact is Curtis rose to the occasion, executing their game plan brilliantly against a formidable opponent. They chipped away, found gaps, and ultimately delivered the decisive blows that extinguished West Valley's perfect record. It was a testament to the depth of talent across Washington's 4A baseball landscape, proving that on any given day, any team can pull off a monumental victory.

While the loss is undoubtedly a bitter pill for West Valley, it does not diminish the incredible season they put together. Their undefeated regular season will forever be a part of school history, a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of every player and coach. For Curtis, this win is a massive momentum builder, launching them further into the WIAA 4A State Baseball Tournament with a newfound confidence.
