Walla Walla High School's boys soccer team, affectionately known as the Wa-Hi Blue Devils, absolutely commanded the field with a resounding 4-0 victory over North Thurston in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Playing on their home turf at Blue Devil Stadium, Walla Walla delivered a stellar performance that thrilled their passionate fan base and sent a clear message to the rest of the WIAA state bracket, they are a force to be reckoned with. This commanding display of skill, tactical prowess, and relentless effort truly exemplifies the dedication of Washington's top prep soccer athletes.

Defensive Masterclass and Relentless Pressure

From the moment the whistle blew, Walla Walla asserted its dominance, dictating the pace and controlling possession with precision. The Blue Devils' midfield, led by the dynamic junior Damian Castruita and the ever-industrious junior Mavrec Mills, was instrumental in orchestrating attacks. Mills, in particular, was seen delivering pinpoint cross-field balls that consistently put North Thurston's defense under duress. Up front, the young but formidable duo of freshman Isaiah Betancourt and sophomore Cristian Tapia maintained relentless pressure, forcing turnovers and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Betancourt's agility and Tapia's vision, as he often looked to make key passes, kept North Thurston's junior defender Royce Rodriguez and the rest of his backline constantly scrambling.

While the offensive firepower was evident, the true bedrock of Walla Walla's success against the Rams was their impenetrable defense. Sophomore goalkeeper Finnegan Martin was a picture of composure between the posts, earning a well-deserved clean sheet. Martin commanded his box with authority, making critical saves when called upon and organizing his backline flawlessly. The entire defensive unit communicated seamlessly, snuffing out any flicker of hope for North Thurston and ensuring the dominant scoreline remained intact. This defensive solidity has been a consistent hallmark of Walla Walla's season, and it is undoubtedly peaking at exactly the right time for the challenges of the state championships.

A Celebration of Team Spirit and Forward Momentum

Though specific goal scorers were not highlighted, the collective joy and camaraderie after each score were palpable. Each goal was met with thunderous applause from the home crowd and celebrated passionately by the entire Blue Devils squad, underscoring the deep bond within the team. Even a determined attempt by Jaykob Lopez to put the ball past the goal in the second half, a testament to Walla Walla's persistent attacking mindset, added to the game's excitement. After the final whistle, the jubilant celebration spilled over to the stands, with senior Felix Hernandez Saldana sharing a heartfelt embrace with Abigail Castellano amidst the cheering home faithful. These are the cherished moments these dedicated student-athletes work tirelessly for, and it is clear the Walla Walla community is fully invested in their success.

The dominant 4-0 victory is more than just a win, it is a powerful statement. It reflects the hard work of every player and the effective strategies of the coaching staff, all committed to representing their school with pride.
