Washington Defensive Lineman Voi Tunuufi Dead at 23 in Car Accident
The college football world is mourning the loss of a player who left an indelible mark on the University of Washington program. Former Huskies defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi has passed away at just 23 years old after a car accident on Sunday, according to his sister Sanita Tunuufi, who spoke to the Seattle Times.
The University of Washington released a statement honoring their former player: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

Tunuufi made 52 appearances for the Huskies over four seasons after starting his football career at East High in Salt Lake City. He signed with UW under coach Jimmy Lake in 2021 and played through coaching changes, eventually playing under Kalen DeBoer and Jedd Fisch. His versatility made him a crucial part of Washington's defense, especially during his senior season.
The numbers tell the story of a relentless pass rusher. He recorded 14 starts, 86 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks. He also added two passes defended and a forced fumble to his resume. His last game in a Huskies uniform came in the 2024 Sun Bowl.
Fighting for One More Shot
After his college career, Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and competed at Washington's Pro Day, but he wasn't selected and didn't receive any rookie minicamp invites. Rather than give up on football, he stayed in shape with aspirations of playing in the CFL or UFL.
His high school coach Brandon Matich, who coached him at East High, said it best: "He's the best football player I ever coached, and he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi."
Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years during his 15-year tenure at East High. That tells you everything you need to know about his character and work ethic.
Our thoughts are with the Tunuufi family and everyone who knew him during this incredibly difficult time.
