Washington State Legend Deone Bucannon Returns to Pullman, Inspiring Next Generation of WA Prep Stars

In a heartwarming story that echoes the values of commitment and perseverance we champion in Washington state high school sports, former Washington State University (WSU) and NFL safety Deone Bucannon has returned to Pullman, fulfilling a decade-old promise to his parents by completing his degree. This incredible full-circle moment provides a powerful message for every student-athlete currently grinding on fields and courts across our great state, from the 4A giants to the 1B contenders.

A Cougar's Stellar Collegiate and Pro Career

Bucannon's journey to the pinnacle of football began long before he became an All-American for the Cougars. His dedication to the game saw him arrive in Pullman as a highly-touted three-star recruit. From 2010 to 2013, he was a dominant force for WSU, showcasing the kind of tenacity and skill that every high school coach in Washington strives to instill in their players. As a senior, he earned well-deserved All-American and All-Pac-12 Conference first-team honors, finishing his collegiate career with an astounding 380-plus tackles and 15 interceptions, including a memorable touchdown-robbing snag in the 2012 Apple Cup. His stellar performance caught the eye of NFL scouts, leading to his selection by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2014 NFL Draft. Bucannon played five seasons for the Cardinals, accumulating over 400 tackles before an ankle injury slowed his momentum. He later cycled through other NFL teams, eventually retiring as a member of the Super Bowl winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers' active roster in 2021. For many Washington high school football players, Bucannon's path represents the ultimate dream, a testament to what hard work on the prep fields can lead to.

Commitment Beyond the Field: The Promise Kept

Despite a successful NFL career, Bucannon never forgot the handful of credits he needed to earn his degree. This commitment was deeply ingrained by his parents, Duane Bucannon and Sonji Bucannon, both military veterans with multiple degrees in healthcare. "Finishing what you started, that's just something in our household that's just always been ingrained in me," Bucannon stated, reflecting on his family's emphasis on education and resilience. His mother, Sonji Bucannon, an inspiration to him, instilled the value of hard work, a trait seen on every sideline of a competitive WIAA game. Bucannon's affection for WSU and the Pullman community, where he committed on his first visit, is evident. He fondly recalls working with coaches like then-defensive backs coach Chris Ball, who recently led Northern Arizona University's program. This strong bond to his college alma mater, and his promise to his parents, highlights a profound sense of loyalty and responsibility that transcends athletic achievement.

An Enduring Legacy for Washington's Rising Stars

Deone Bucannon's story is more than just a personal triumph, it's a blueprint for the young athletes currently shaping their futures on Washington's high school fields. It powerfully illustrates that while athletic dreams can take you to incredible heights, education, perseverance, and keeping one's word are equally, if not more, important. His return to Pullman under the "WSU flag" serves as a beacon, reminding every 3A wide receiver, 2A lineman, and 1A point guard that the lessons learned and promises made during these formative years can shape an entire lifetime, both on and off the field for Washington's high school athletes.
