West Valley's Undefeated Run Halted by Resilient Curtis in 4A State Baseball Opener

YAKIMA, WA - The perfect dream came to a crashing halt on Saturday, May 23, 2026, as West Valley (Yakima) baseball, the pride of the Central B Basin League (CBBN) and the state's last remaining undefeated team, suffered a heartbreaking first-round loss to a tenacious Curtis High School squad from the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) in the WIAA 4A State Baseball Tournament. The highly anticipated matchup, held at Yakima County Stadium, saw the Vikings of University Place hand the previously flawless Rams their first defeat of the season, ending their remarkable 20-0 run and shattering hopes of an unblemished state championship.

A State Tournament Thriller Unfolds

The atmosphere at Yakima County Stadium was electric, crackling with anticipation for West Valley's state tournament debut. From the first pitch, it was clear this would be no ordinary game. Curtis, known for its fierce competitiveness, brought its A-game, matching West Valley's intensity blow for blow. The Rams' star pitcher, Rhyse Elder, took the mound, battling through a tough Curtis lineup. Elder, who also contributed at the plate, drove in two crucial runs with a well-placed single, showcasing his two-way talent.

The game was a defensive chess match, with both teams making spectacular plays. West Valley's Karter Huwe was sharp in the field, making key plays to keep Curtis in check. On the basepaths, the Rams showed their aggression, with Colby Graham sliding safe into third base on one occasion, pushing the limits and creating scoring opportunities. Jack Goodrich also found his way across home plate, adding to West Valley's efforts to stave off the upset. However, Curtis's relentless pressure ultimately proved too much, with the Vikings managing to capitalize on their chances and secure the monumental victory, sending shockwaves through the 4A bracket.

A Season of Unforgettable Achievement

While the loss stings, it in no way diminishes the incredible season West Valley baseball put together. To navigate an entire regular season and district tournament without a single defeat is a testament to the unparalleled dedication, talent, and teamwork of this group of young athletes and their coaching staff. Their 20-0 record leading into the state tournament wasn't just a number, it was a symbol of their relentless pursuit of excellence, their countless hours of practice, and their unwavering belief in each other. These Rams captivated the community, demonstrating the very best of Washington State prep sports. They played with heart, passion, and an unbreakable spirit that will be remembered long after this game.

Every player, from the starters to those coming off the bench, contributed to this historic run. They faced adversity throughout the season and consistently rose to the occasion, proving their mettle game after game. Though the state championship dream ended prematurely, the legacy of the 2026 West Valley baseball team, spearheaded by players like Colby Graham, Jack Goodrich, Karter Huwe, and Rhyse Elder, will inspire future generations of Rams to reach for similar heights. The competition in the WIAA 4A classification is fierce, and earning a spot in the state tournament, let alone compiling an undefeated record, is an immense accomplishment worthy of immense pride.

Despite the bitter taste of defeat, the future remains bright for both West Valley and Curtis baseball, as these programs continue to develop formidable talent that will undoubtedly be back contending for state glory in the seasons to come.
