Will Burghardt Took The Helm At 27, And All Of Washington State Is Watching Richland

WOAH. Richland High School just made a move that has the entire state buzzing! They've officially tapped Will Burghardt, an incredible 27-year-old, to lead their boys basketball program as the new head coach. And let's be real, this ain't just *any* team. We're talking about the reigning 2025-26 Washington State No. 1 ranked squad, the Bomber boys who went a perfect 28-0 and snagged that Class 4A state championship by taking down Gonzaga Prep, 63-49. Yeah, the top dogs are getting younger leadership, and everyone in Washington should be paying attention.

The Youngest Ever For The State's Best

Think about that for a second: 27 years old! Burghardt isn't just young, he's the *youngest ever* to assume the head coach role for Richland boys basketball. This program has some serious history, too, with Burghardt marking the seventh head coach hiring since 1947, and the 30th overall in program history. Richland didn't just have a perfect season last year, they've been absolutely dominant, capping their fourth consecutive season with 20-plus wins. They finished the last season at an immaculate 28-0, locking in that No. 1 spot according to the final Washington 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings. With a foundation like that, bringing in fresh, young energy like Burghardt feels like a strategic power move.

A Track Record That Speaks Volumes

Now, you might be thinking, "27? Is he ready for the pressure?" Well, Burghardt isn't coming in cold. He spent three seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Newport in Oregon, where he compiled an overall record of 49-24. In his final season with the Cubs, he led them to an impressive 19-5 record and pushed them deep into the OHSAA playoffs. That's a solid resume for someone so young, showing he knows how to win and how to lead a team to deep runs. He's clearly got game, and the Bombers are getting a coach who's already tasted success. The future for Richland boys basketball is looking wild, right? With a 27-year-old Will Burghardt at the helm of the defending Class 4A state champs, the expectations are through the roof. Can he continue the legacy of four consecutive 20-plus win seasons and perhaps even deliver another flawless 28-0 run? You know everyone in the Emerald State is gonna be watching closely to see what he brings to the court. Get ready, Washington, because Richland is just getting started.
