Washington Defensive Lineman Voi Tunuufi Dead At 23 Following Car Accident

The Seattle area lost a piece of Washington football history this week. Voi Tunuufi, the former Huskies defensive lineman who played 52 games over four seasons in a Husky uniform, has passed away at just 23 years old. His sister, Sanita Tunuufi, confirmed to the Seattle Times that he died in a car accident on Sunday.

The University of Washington released a statement honoring their fallen player: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

From Salt Lake City To The Pac-12

Tunuufi came to Washington after starring at East High in Salt Lake City. He signed with the Huskies under head coach Jimmy Lake in 2021 and would eventually play for three different coaches during his tenure: Lake, Kalen DeBoer, and Jedd Fisch. His versatility on the defensive line made him a critical piece of the program's defense, especially during his senior season.

The numbers tell the story of a productive college career. Tunuufi made 14 starts, racked up 86 tackles with 15.5 for loss, recorded 12.5 sacks, defended two passes, and forced a fumble. He last played for UW in the 2024 Sun Bowl, leaving the program with four years of solid production.

After his time in Seattle, Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and went through Washington's Pro Day. He wasn't selected in the draft and didn't receive a rookie minicamp invite, but he stayed determined. He kept himself in shape with goals of playing professionally, whether in the CFL or UFL.

His high school coach, Brandon Matich, captured what made Tunuufi special. "He's the best football player I ever coached," Matich said. "And he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi." Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years during his 15-year tenure at East High.

Our thoughts are with the Tunuufi family during this incredibly difficult time.
