Washington High School Girls Basketball Team Gets City Love After State Championship Run

The Washington City Council took time out from the usual municipal grind Monday to celebrate Coach Kim Barth and her Class 3A state champion Washington Community High School girls basketball team. Mayor Lilija Stevens presented the Panthers with a city proclamation and accolades for bringing home the hardware. It's the kind of moment that reminds you why high school sports matter in a community.

More Than Just Ballers

Barth made it clear these Panthers are doing it the right way, both on the court and in the classroom. "These girls are not just amazing basketball players. They're amazing kids," Barth said. The team's academics are legitimately impressive: a collective GPA over 4.1, with one player rocking a 4.8. That kind of excellence should land them on the IHSA All-Academic Team as well, another fantastic honor on top of the state championship.

This is the second straight year the city has honored the Panthers. Last year, they got recognition for finishing third in Class 3A. Back-to-back recognition from the City Council shows this program is building something real.

City Engineering Gets Its Moment Too

The council also recognized City Engineer Dennis Carr and TERRA Engineering for some serious work off the basketball court. TERRA picked up a 2025 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for the Nofsinger Road realignment project. George Ghareed, head of operations at TERRA's Peoria office, presented the plaque Monday. This is the second straight year TERRA won the award for a Washington project. In 2024, they earned recognition for the Freedom Parkway construction project.

City Business in the Background

Beyond the celebrations, City Administrator Jeff Fiegenschuh reported the city is working through a couple of ongoing issues. Developer CLRED behind the Tangled Roots Craft Beer & Kitchen downtown has had multiple disputes with neighbor Marlene Miller over damage to her residence and business at 114 Walnut Street, including a court case that settled out of court. The latest problem involves drainage issues on Miller's property, something Fiegenschuh's team is trying to resolve. Another property owner at 312 Zinser Place claims trucks are taking wide turns and damaging yards, though Zinser Place isn't even a designated truck route. City Engineer Carr also flagged that Prairie Telecom removed portions of sidewalk at Jefferson and Wilmor Road without replacing them, causing injury to a pedestrian. The company plans to fix the hazard soon.
