West Valley's Undefeated Season Shattered, Curtis Claims Upset in WIAA 4A State Baseball Tournament

The unparalleled, undefeated season of West Valley High School baseball, a remarkable streak that captured the attention and admiration across Washington state, concluded abruptly and dramatically on Saturday, May 23, 2026. In a stunning turn of events, the formidable West Valley Bears, previously unblemished, fell to a determined Curtis High School squad in the opening round of the WIAA 4A state baseball tournament. Played on the hallowed grounds of Yakima County Stadium in Yakima, the game brought an end to West Valley's dream of a perfect championship run, yet their incredible journey leaves an indelible mark on the landscape of Washington prep baseball.

A Season for the Record Books

Before this pivotal Saturday, West Valley had pieced together a record that few teams ever dare to imagine, a flawless run that spoke volumes about their collective talent, unwavering dedication, and astute coaching. Every single pitch, every powerful swing, and every crucial out had meticulously built towards this moment, culminating in their status as a top seed and carrying the immense weight of expectation into the state tournament. The buzz around the Yakima-based squad, representing the pride of the CBBN district, was palpable, with fans and pundits alike watching to see if they could complete the historic feat.

The opening-round clash against Curtis was everything a high-stakes state tournament game should be: a nail-biting, back-and-forth battle. West Valley's star pitcher, Rhyse Elder, who had been a model of consistency and dominance throughout the entire season, battled fiercely on the mound, leaving everything he had out there. Not just a force with his arm, Elder also showcased his offensive prowess, driving in two crucial runs with a well-timed single, attempting to spark a rally for the Bears. The West Valley lineup fought with grit, seeing Jack Goodrich score a vital run and Colby Graham demonstrating his aggressive and intelligent base running, sliding safely into third base to keep the pressure on Curtis.

Curtis Delivers the Decisive Blow

Defensively, Karter Huwe was a key presence in the field for West Valley, making critical plays that kept the Bears in contention and prevented potential Curtis breakouts. Despite the heroic efforts and unwavering resolve of the West Valley players, Curtis High School, a strong contender hailing from the SPSL district, proved to be the more resilient team on this particular day. The Vikings, entering as the underdog against the seemingly invincible Bears, played with a focused purpose, capitalizing on their opportunities and delivering the decisive blows that ultimately brought an end to West Valley's incredible, storybook run.

This loss, while undoubtedly a bitter pill for the entire West Valley community and especially for the players, does absolutely nothing to diminish the sheer brilliance and historical significance of their regular season performance. Their undefeated record, culminating in a spot in the WIAA 4A state tournament, will be remembered and celebrated for years to come as one of the finest achievements in Washington state high school baseball history.

The abrupt nature of single-elimination tournaments can be a cruel mistress, where one off day or one exceptional opponent can swiftly erase a season's worth of dominance. For the dedicated players of West Valley, including seniors like Rhyse Elder, Colby Graham, Jack Goodrich, and Karter Huwe, the sting of this defeat will undoubtedly be fresh. However, the invaluable experience gained from a deep tournament run and the unforgettable memories forged during an undefeated regular season will undoubtedly serve as a powerful foundation. These young men showed immense heart, incredible skill, and unwavering determination, proving they were undeniably among Washington's elite prep athletes. The lessons learned from this challenging postseason experience will undoubtedly fuel the returning players, ensuring that West Valley baseball remains a formidable and respected program for many seasons to come.
