World No. 6 Amanda Anisimova Out of Rome With Left Wrist Injury

Amanda Anisimova just pulled the plug on her Rome campaign. The 24-year-old American withdrew from the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Thursday due to a left wrist injury, handing her second-round spot to lucky loser Elena Gabriela Ruse of Romania. Ruse will face Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the match Anisimova was supposed to play.

A Rough Clay Court Season So Far

This Rome withdrawal is the third time Anisimova has bailed on a clay court event this season. She previously withdrew from both the Charleston Open and the Mutua Madrid Open before even stepping foot on the red clay. That's a concerning pattern for a four-time WTA Tour title winner and two-time Grand Slam finalist who needs these events to stay sharp heading into the summer.

Strong Start on Hard Courts, But the Wrist Is Talking

On the bright side, Anisimova's hard court form has been solid. She's sitting at 11-6 in singles this season and made it to the Round of 16 at both Miami and Indian Wells back in March. But if the wrist keeps sidelining her from clay events, that momentum could evaporate quick. Rome is one of the biggest clay tournaments on the calendar, and watching from the sidelines is never how you want to prepare for the rest of the season.

The question now is whether this is a minor hiccup or something more serious heading into the clay court stretch. Watch for updates on her status as the season unfolds.
